What should be done if the noise of a three-phase transformer is too loud? 5 possible causes of the problem and their solutions

2025-05-28

We all know that dry-type transformers are an important part of the power distribution system. However, when a three-phase dry-type transformer starts to make abnormal sounds, it may indicate the presence of potential problems. At this point, we must be vigilant because dealing with the noise of the transformer can maintain operational efficiency and ensure safety.

1. Magnetic Noise from Core Vibration

The main source of noise in dry-type transformers is magnetic noise. Therefore, to address this issue, we need to ensure that the core is correctly assembled and fixed.     Tightening the core bolts and using damping materials can help reduce vibrations. Additionally, applying an appropriate coating on the core can minimize noise by reducing the movement of the core layers.

2. Loose Windings

Loose windings can also cause abnormal sounds from the transformer. At this point, we need to check if there are any signs of looseness in the windings. Of course, we can also re-impregnate the windings with resin to ensure they are firmly bonded and to suppress any vibrations.

3. Cooling System Issues

We all know that when the cooling system of a dry-type transformer gets clogged or malfunctions, it may cause overheating, which in turn leads to unusual sounds from the transformer. Therefore, we regularly maintain the cooling system to ensure that there are no obstructions in the ventilation ports and that the cooling fans (if applicable) are operating properly. If overheating is detected, we will reduce the load on the transformer or improve the ventilation in that area.

4. Electrical Imbalance

Due to the electrical imbalance in the three-phase system, the noise level of the dry-type transformer will increase. This imbalance leads to an uneven distribution of the load, resulting in overheating and vibration. Therefore, we will conduct a thorough analysis of the electrical load of each phase, and redistribute the load or add additives.

5. Aging and Wear

Due to the aging of the transformer, components may wear out, which can lead to an increase in noise levels. In particular, insulation degradation, loose connections, and other issues related to wear and tear can all cause abnormal sounds. Therefore, we will regularly inspect and maintain the aging transformers, replace any worn-out parts, and consider upgrading the insulation materials to improve performance.
